Bats | Khadynka | Helipoause = CANCELLED
It's with pretty heavy hearts that we tell you all that the gig featuring Bats, Khadynka and Helipause has been cancelled. Got word from Bats yesterday that they wouldn't be able to the gig as their drummer just found out he was unavailable for it and then this morning Colm from Khadynka rang to say that they'd be unable to play as their drummer has just left the band.
So yeah, we've decided not to go ahead with a gig on June 21st as it's too soon to find suitable replacements.
We're quite disappointed ourselves as it really looked to be one of the most exciting line-ups of our summer shows.
Sorry to everyone who was looking forward to the gig but hopefully we'll see some of you this Saturday at the River Valley Band/Hola Manana fundraiser gig in Ryan's or at some of the other shows we have coming up - there's more shows being announced pretty regularly on our myspace so keep an eye out here.
Cheers.

Previously unpublished PATPH/SUPERNOVA SCOTIA ARTICLE
Supernova brighten up the house
Kilkenny band Supernova Scotia are adding to Problems at the Pancake House
On the back of last weeks article teaming band and record label together as a helping hand to each other, I have had my eyes open, largely due to curiosity, to this phenomenon. When you think of a record label, you automatically think about the big wigs, the fat cats in suits making their millions off the latest band they've pulled off the production line for their fifteen minutes in the spotlight. But when you encounter a small label who are just themselves starting out in the big bad world of music too, the experience is going to be a lot different. It's different because these labels are in it for the long haul with these bands, wanting them to make it just as much as they do. Sure, it's got to do with profit also, if the band don't make it then neither do the label. But if the label makes it with a band starting out then a lasting bond and a mutual respect for each other is formed, providing no one gets too big for their boots that is!
So how do you set about becoming a record label and get a load of bands on your books to help you on the road to musical success? Well, look to Kilkenny's Problems at the Pancake House for an example. Currently titled as an art/music promotions group based in Kilkenny, they organise local gigs with local bands and also with bands as far a field as San Francisco. They've got a growing list of bands that they avail of for organising these local shows such as Moses Moorehouse, Cars In Walls, House of Cosy Cushions and my MySpace Music of the week, Kilkenny band Super Nova Scotia.
Problems at the Pancake House are in the process of setting up a record label and will no doubt have their promotions list signed up to their label from the start. For each gig, PATPH have two or three bands playing on the night and have a free CD with the bands of the night waiting for you on admission. PATPH have been wise in their set-up; they are testing the waters of small names bands promotion and it appears to be working well for them if they are going to go full throttle to becoming a label. But it seems to me that there's love for the music and promotion behind the scenes of this operation, the handmade posters and CD covers give PATPH an accessible, cosy feel, something I hope they maintain if they do make it in the label world.
Fresh off the stage from Saturday nights PATPH gig in Cleere's come Supernova Scotia, making their first Kilkenny appearance in about a year. Describing their sound as Japanese Pop/ Surf/ New Wave, or if you prefer, "Daniel O'Donnell played backwards", Supernova Scotia are simply put, refreshing. Having formed in early 2006, Supernova Scotia are David Sheenan, John Prendergast, Neil Quigley, Steven Morton and Niall O'Reagan. When you hear that a band are pop like electro you conjure up a sound thats based around computer synth's and messed up beats, but Supernova Scotia are here to surprise you. While they do incorporate the computerised sound in songs like Worrying is Wasteful, they also provide some lyrics and fantastic music of a classical genre with piano and violins in Oxen.
With an endless list of influences cited on their site, it seems that Supernova Scotia have listened to all thats on offer to our ears in the past and present, and decided that while it was nice to hear, they wanted to put their own stamp on the market, and even on a genre. While their talent comes clearly across in all songs, so too does their quirkyness, always a plus to make music more interesting. They have a list of explanations for each song accompanied by a fact in relation to the song such as "Tron is not a song about the fantastic film of the same name. ?FACT: Jeff Bridges is not 'Tron' in the film; Bruce Boxleitner is." A nice touch.
.. --> m -->Supernova Scotia are definitely ones to be watched closely as they are back and eager to get their sound out there. With more gigs after Saturday's PATPH soon to be announced, pay close attention to their MySpace http://www.myspace.com/supernovascotiaband.. --> m -->.. --> m -->. Problems at the Pancake House have a whole lot of gigs in the pipeline with the next one taking place in Ryan's on June 7th. They are definitely worth checking out and for more details go to http://www.myspace.com/patph

Hello-ho,
Unfortunately we have run into some delays with the second edition of Hello Hello Hello, the new fanzine that we've been working on for the last few months.
The zine was due to be released for mid-May but it's been a very busy time of year for us at the Pancake House and, due to other commitments, the second edition won't be reaching the shelves of Kilkenny until next month.
While the whole fanzine is still very much at the beginning stages, we intend to motor on with it to the best of our capabilities so please do bear with us in these early days.
Thanks for reading and don't forget about our show this Saturday with Supernova Scotia and Cars In Walls in Cleere's (Kilkenny).
Yours,
The Pancake House Resident's Association.

PATPH FACTORY

------------------------------------------------
07 Aug 2007
We at Problems at the Pancake House are proud to present this fine showcase of talent from our fair city, along with some out-of-town visitors, which will take place in our regular home of Cleere’s Theatre, Kilkenny on Saturday the 18th of August. From solo piano to disk-scratching madness and folk melodies to atmospheric instrumentals, it promises to be a varied and memorable show.
The night will begin as an intimate, seated affair, starting off with Ennis-native Caitríona Ní Chaitháin, who brings her expressive and thrilling solo piano set to this perfect setting; an enthralling blend of beautiful melodies and powerful bass lines reminiscent of the works of Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, along with some hints of trad, Caitríona’s set should prove to be the perfect start to the night. You can listen to some of her pieces here: myspace.com/caitrionanichaithain
Kilkenny local Danny Coady then makes his debut as Officer Coady; Coady will be known to many through his fine performances with Thompson and 40 Love, and if both those fantastic acts are anything to go by then Officer Coady should prove to be quite the treat indeed.
Moses Moorhouse also makes his debut performance at the night’s show, though most will know him as that ‘Jack O’ Leary chap’ who headlined our first ‘Pancake House’ show way, way back in May. It was an absolute mesmerising performance and we are delighted to host another of his unmissable sets. Prepare for more of his infamous stories, sweet vocals and captivating guitar work which will be complimented on the night by Jane Murphy on cello and Aisling O’ Neil on vocals.myspace.com/mosesmoorhous
Following Moses Moorhouse will be the instrumental group Jazz Pandawho also played at the first ‘Pancake House show. Led by Neil Quigley and joined by Peter Lawler, Niall O’ Regan and Stephen Morton, the group’s eclectic set should prove to be a powerful display of atmospheric and electrifying guitar-based pieces. myspace.com/jazzpanda
Following Jazz Panda’s set, the seats will pushed to the back of the theatre to make room for the serious dancing that will inevitably commence as electronic maestros Supernova Scotia take to the stage, bringing their funky mix of electronics, live drums, guitars and sweet falsetto croonings back to Cleere’s for another energetic performance. Formed by Dave Sheenan in 2006 and joined by three-quarters of ‘a safe dry place’ Supernova Scotia played their debut at our last show with Queen Kong before headlining at the Devious Theatre’s fantastic fundraiser gig the next day. myspace.com/supernovascotiaband
They will be followed by Waterford natives You’re Only Massive, who went down a storm at our last show with Queen Kong. Prepare to dance until you’re sick as Megan and Maebh and return to Cleere’s with more of their ridiculously catchy, electro-fused craziness.
myspace.com/youreonlymassive
The good times will then continue late into the night as local legendEddie B finishes in style with another of his fantastic DJ sets, bringing the perfect end to what promises to be a perfect night.
myspace.com/bunterbrennan
The night of course wouldn’t be complete without one of our hand-packaged CDs, free for the first fifty persons through the door. However, instead of the regular split-side, this CD will be a compilation of six acts along with a collection of Stephen Morton’s artwork and is well worth the wee €5 admission fee alone. Be sure to get down early as doors open at 8.30 sharp and CDs are sure to be gone in seconds, if not minutes.
Hope to see you there,

Kilkenny live night announced
07 Aug 2007
07 Aug 2007
Kilkenny’s most exciting live night, Problems At The Pancake House, is set to continue with a showcase night in Cleere’s Theatre on August 18.
It opens with Ennis native Caitríona Ní Chatháin’s spellbinding, traditional-influenced solo piano-playing. Danny Coady of rootsy combo 40 Love notoriety steps up to the plate after that, and he’s followed by Jack O’Leary (now trading as Moses Moorhouse). Be prepared for filigree guitar-work and vocals like the first breath of autumn, interspersed with rambling digressions worthy of Bill Bailey.
Instrumental combo Jazz Panda follow, promising to cool the venue to an ice-house with glacial guitar landscapes. Luckily, Supernova Scotia are on hand to heat things up a little, marrying fragile electronica to live drums to form a truly electrifying whole.
Keeping the dancing going from here will be Waterford’s finest techno/hip-hop trio You’re Only Massive, whose intricate backing tracks and quicksilver rapping will no doubt drop jaws and instigate much uninhibited booty-shaking.
DJ Eddie Brennan is billed as “bringing the perfect end to a perfect night”, and that’s just what he’ll do.
Tickets are €5 at the door, and there’s even a free CD to commemorate the night.

Thanks to everyone who came to the Us/Ponomica/Supernova Scotia & Jazz Panda Colab show last night (14th Sept) - it was a great night and it really is encouraging to see such a strong turnout to a gig that was only properly announced a few days ago.
Thanks especially to Us (Thompson & Jane) who were absolutely fantastic; Ponomica who, despite technical difficulties, wowed everybody in the crowd with their amazing set; and the Supernova Scotia & Jazz Panda Colab who were definitely worth the wait from last week. Indeed.
Over the coming months we'll be working hard on organising our programme for next summer as well as getting some other projects up and running. For now though, we'll be taking a wee break from the Problems at the Pancake House night for a while, with the exception of the House of Cosy Cushions gig in December and perhaps one other before then.
Keep an eye out here on our myspace for more news and details.
Thanks everyone for your support and interest over the last couple of months; a big thank you to Tess Felder from the Kilkenny People, the Kilkenny Advertiser and Hotpress for their generous coverage; and thanks to all the fantastic bands and acts who have played at the PATPH nights so far: Moses Moorhouse, Supernova Scotia, Jazz Panda, Dry County, Somadrone, Queen Kong - too many to count.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to postpone the House Of Cosy Cushions gig until sometime later on in the year. We should have a definite date for the show over the next few days. Apologies for the late announcement.
In the meantime we have Thompson, Ponomica and the Supernova Scotia & Jazz Panda Colab (who weren't able to play at the Dry County/Somadrone gig) all on this Friday, 14th Sept in Ryan's, Kilkenny. More info to come...
Thanks and sorry again,
Hope to see some of you on Friday!

July 25, 2007 - Wednesday
Kilkenny Advertiser, 19/07/07:
What's that coming over the hill?

Left of centre electronica mayhem tops the bill as Kilkenny's exciting new promotional team 'Problems at the Pancake House' play host to their second night of musical mystery in Cleere's Theatre this Friday.
Dublin based quintet Queen Kong are set to unleash havoc on an unsuspecting crowd as they unveil their unique, and slightly terrifying in a thrilling sense, brand of electronic rock, which at times makes Aphex Twin seem decidedly well-adjusted, to a Kilkenny audience.
Currently scaling the heights of the national music scene in a similar manner to which their fictional namesake might have straddled a small scale model of Big Ben thanks to a memorable performance at Dublin's Hard Working Class Heroes festival and high praise from Today FM's Alison Curtis and Hot Press, Queen Kong are truly something to behold.
To pin down their music to any single style or genre seems futile but the band themselves have described it by reminding us of the scene in 'Silence of the Lambs' where Buffalo Bill dances around in front of the mirror putting on makeup.
It all sounds a little obscene but if you happen to have the movie on DVD dig it out (I did!) and give the scene another viewing paying particular attention to the music playing in the background.
This, they tell us, is the type of music that Queen Kong aspire to.
If you need a little more help trying to conjure up a clearer picture of the band's sound just heap an abstract selection of genre defining artists such as Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, Kraftwerk, Chris Isaak and the Pixies into one large hedonistic cauldron and stir indiscriminately with vigour.
At their most melodic synth soaked best in songs such as 'Photograph' they rival Swedish electronic pop heroes Knife, while at other times they can sound equally effective as a raucous cross between Morrisey, Aphex Twin and Faith No More.
Students Niall O'Regan and Stephen Morton set up the Pancake venture as a summer project in an effort to promote some of the acts that might pander to their own musical tastes as well as shining a spotlight on some of the great bands currently corrupting the local scene.
The pair are old hats on the Kilkenny scene having performed for years with Safe Dry Place, an instrumental band O'Regan describes as currently on hiatus with O'Regan Cork bound to continue his musical studies and Morton studying art in Edinburgh.
"There is a lot of good stuff going on in Kilkenny at the moment but we wanted to organise something promoting the music we ourselves are interested in," said O'Regan about the venture.
"Sometimes you see great bands come to Kilkenny and there is just no promotion for them.
"And we also want to promote the local scene because there's no reason a local band shouldn't be on the same level as a Dublin band."
With the metal and rock scenes well catered for in the city 'Problems at the Pancake House' are hoping to provide a platform for music in a different vein and Queen Kong will certainly offer that as well as a perfect foil to the Pancake's first presentation in Cleere's which featured the acoustic stylings of Jack O'Leary.
Support on the night will come from local lads Supernove Scotia, a trio of instrumentalists mixing some electronic beats with an experimental and eclectic mix of live bass, drums and guitars and double DJ trouble with You're Only Massive from Waterford.
While the gig will be a standing affair the team will continue their trend of offering a free spilt side showcasing the music of the bands on display to the customer's wise enough to pay the paltry €5 entrance fee. CDs are limited to the first 50 through the door so get down early to make sure you're not disappointed.
If this gig builds an appetite why not make it a musical weekend and wander back down to Cleere's on the Saturday night where Supernova Scotia will join Jack O'Leary and Thompson for a fundraiser for the Devious Theatre group. To keep up to date with future 'Problems at the Pancake House' offerings this summer visit www.myspace.com/patph where you'll find links to all the acts mentioned above.

Kilkenny People, 19/07/07
A Super, Massive, Queen of a night

COLOURFUL, eclectic, creative - and that's just the names of the
bands joining up for a gig in Cleere's this Friday.
Queen Kong, Supernova Scotia, and You're Only Massive will be putting
on a ... massive ... night of music, and the first 50 audience
members will get to take home a hand-packaged CD featuring music by
all three acts.
How to describe Queen Kong? Here's a start:
"Remember the scene in Silence of the Lambs when Buffalo Bill is
dancing around in front of the mirror, putting on makeup? Go watch it
again, but this time, listen to the music in the background. THAT'S
the kind of music Queen Kong strive to make."
Their "delirious collision of synth, drums, sax and guitars" comes to
Kilkenny for the first time on Friday, but they've been part of the
Hard Working Class Heroes festival in Dublin, and have supported Saul
Williams, the Like and Good Shoes.
NME magazine called them "the kings and queens of the Irish music
scene", and a sample of their music and videos is on myspace.com/qk.
They will be joined on the night by Kilkenny band Supernova Scotia.
It's the debut performance of the band formed early last year by
David Sheenan.
The sound is mainly "electronic music, with the sounds of bass,
guitars and drums both in the mix and on stage with a live band", and
you can hear more on myspace.com/supernovascotiaband.
Rounding out the night will be You're Only Massive, a two-female DJ
act from Waterford, who can be heard on the web at myspace.com/
youreonlymassive.
The gig is brought to you by Problems at the Pancake House
promotions, which is brought to you by Kilkenny natives Stephen
Morton and Niall O' Regan.
Both are home from college for the summer (Niall in Cork, and Stephen
in Waterford, although he'll be heading to Edinburgh in September),
and instead of lazing their days away, they decided to arrange
monthly gigs featuring their favourite bands.
The name "Problems at the Pancake House" is originally from a scene
in the film Love Liza.
They initially had other ideas for the name "we wanted to do a jam
session and get local people around but nothing really came of it,"
says Stephen, so when they started producing gigs they already had a
name to put on it.
As members of the band A Safe Dry Place, both had experience in
promoting gigs, but they'd had to learn the hard way.
"We did it all ourselves, as a lot of bands do," Niall says.
"When we started A Safe Dry Place there was no big promotion,"
Stephen adds. "You had to do it yourself in Kilkenny. There was no
one really there to help."
Both feel Kilkenny's music scene has a lot going on, especially in
terms of metal, but they wanted to hear more of their own favourite
bands.
"They do the music they're interested in but we wanted to get the
music that we listen to, and some of the artists we're friends with,"
Niall says.
"I actively listen to a lot of this stuff," Stephen adds, citing
David Thompson as "one of the best songwriters I have ever heard".
In addition to Friday at Cleere's, they are planning gigs for August
and September, and possibly when they return for their Christmas
holidays and again next summer.
They also want a more personal feel to the gigs, which is one reason
they are hand-packaging the CDs to be given away on the night, and
Stephen is also the artist behind the eye-catching posters.
The CDs are also intended to give listeners something to take home
from the experience.
"When the band comes to play, that's it; but with a CD you have
something to remember it by," says Niall.
And by staging local bands along with those from Dublin and
elsewhere, "you can see how Kilkenny bands live up to the others,"
Stephen says. "I don't see why Kilkenny bands should be second to any
other bands in Ireland."
To learn more about their projects, have a look at myspace.com/patph
- or better yet, call in to Cleere's on Friday.
Doors open at 8.30pm
and admission is €5.

We're just beginning to get this whole thing started and as you've probably guessed the whole project/idea is very much in its infancy. But where there's a will there should be a way. And we do have the will. And the way shouldn't be too, too difficult...
As of yet we're still unsure where exactly we're going to be taking this thing, but the whole idea is based on our firm conviction that Kilkenny needs a greater variety of fresh, interesting and, most of all, good quality bands to liven up its music scene. And, with that belief, we hope to organise gigs with a range of diverse acts from around the county and country, promote it to the best of our ability and give both the audience and the artists involved a relaxed environment and a memorable night.
We'll have some music up soon from the bands and artists who we're going to have playing, as well as other treats and surprises, including a proper website at some stage. Really.
Until then,
